“Hey! You’re like me”

Have you ever been asked to “fit in”, “behave like others” or “follow the rules”?

Welcome to the land of conformity! Our behaviour is the result of environmental conditioning or corporate culture!

Corporations use the “like me” mechanism of learning & success to create a sense of belonging in the workplace…

Imagine a meeting room where all the leaders think the same, talk the same and take the same decisions!

Isn’t it boring?

Humans are “mimic creatures”…starting in infancy, we learn by imitation and we use it to build our social connections.

By spending time with people, we end up adopting the same style…we pick up the same body language and mannerisms…!!

Conformity becomes the norm!

I personally never been good at “ fitting in” and I’ve been reminded in many occasions…

Who cares? I always find a way to remain the “happy outsider”…

Diversity increases the richness of discussions and the challenge is managing differences diversity brings…We need leaders to communicate differently and take decisions differently.

People need to be seen as human beings first! Being ourselves is the best thing we can be!

Time for the companies to reinvent their cultures. Great leaders don’t think alike!

This post is dedicated to my mother-in-law #Helen Adumekwe

She reminded me this morning that it takes courage to be different!

XoXo,

Hindy
